Allergy testing, diagnostics and management

Urticaria is a common condition with itching hives (weals) developing on the skin. It can sometimes last for more than six weeks which can be distressing. There are many underlying causes apart from allergies for this condition and we can help with identifying possible triggers.

Food allergies currently affect 1-2% of adults and around 8% of children in the British Isles. We can help correctly diagnose the food involved and offer advice on avoidance, management and treatment of the allergy including training in how to recognise and manage more severe reactions.

Eczema is a skin condition causing dryness and inflamed areas of the skin which can itch and irritate. It is increasingly recognised in children as a risk factor for developing food allergies and screening for these can help aid the early introduction of foods into the diet.

Affecting around 5 million people in the UK, asthma causes inflammation of the airways affecting breathing and causing coughing and wheeze. Treatment is with inhaled medications. We can help in diagnosing underlying triggers and advice on treatment.

Hay Fever (allergic rhinitis) now affects nearly 30% of people in Europe. Grass pollen is the most common cause though people can have symptoms to other pollens, dust and pets. Treatment with immunotherapy can be suitable for people who do not respond to usual medications.

Scratch tests are performed by placing a small amount of allergen solution on the skin (often the forearm) and using a sterile lancet to gently introduce the allergen under the surface of the skin. Patch Tests` are used in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis, when direct contact on the skin of a particular allergen can cause a delayed skin reaction. These tests are performed by putting adhesive patches on the skin, testing multiple allergens at a time. The test takes several days to complete with reviews with the doctor or nurse during that period.
